You wash your hair. The water is right there. Your conditioner is right there. You followed the instructions like a responsible member of society.
And somehow your hair still has opinions.
Maybe it takes forever to feel properly wet. Maybe every leave-in seems to sit on top of it. Or maybe the exact opposite happens: your hair seems to drink up everything you apply and then acts dry again five minutes later.
This is usually when the internet introduces you to hair porosity.
And then, unfortunately, the internet introduces you to seventeen rules, a glass of water, a floating strand of hair, three conflicting product lists, and the sudden suspicion that your conditioner has been personally sabotaging you.
It does not need to be this complicated.
Hair porosity is a real property of the hair fiber, and understanding it can give you useful clues about how your hair interacts with water, treatments, and damage. But low, medium, and high porosity are better treated as practical descriptions than three rigid hair personalities that determine everything you are allowed to put on your head.
Here is what porosity actually means, what may affect it, and how to figure out where your hair probably sits on the spectrum.
What Is Hair Porosity?
At its simplest, hair porosity describes properties of the hair fiber that affect how water and other substances can move into and through it.
The version you usually see online — ‘your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture’ — is a useful shortcut, but it is not the entire science.
Hair fibers have an inherently porous internal structure. Researchers can investigate characteristics such as pore volume and pore-size distribution using laboratory methods including gas sorption and thermoporometry. Those measurements can change when the fiber is chemically or physically altered.[1][2]
In normal life, of course, nobody is sending three strands of hair to a laboratory before buying conditioner.
So haircare conversations usually divide porosity into three practical categories:
- Low porosity: hair described as being toward the less-permeable end of the spectrum and often slower to become thoroughly saturated.
- Medium porosity: hair that behaves somewhere between the two practical extremes.
- High porosity: hair described as being more permeable; substantial weathering or chemical damage can increase measured porosity.
Think of these as points along a spectrum, not three boxes your hair was assigned at birth.
And yes, different parts of the same head of hair can behave differently.
Your relatively untouched roots and your three-year-old, highlighted, heat-styled ends have not lived the same life. It would actually be a little suspicious if they behaved exactly the same.

The Cuticle Matters — But It Isn’t the Whole Story
If you have ever seen a porosity diagram online, you probably know the cuticle already.
The cuticle is the protective outer layer of the hair shaft, made of overlapping cells. Beneath it is the cortex, which makes up most of the fiber and contributes heavily to its mechanical properties.
Damage to these structures matters. Research has found that bleaching and environmental or repeated physical stress can alter hair structure and porosity-related measurements.[3][4]
A 2025 study on textured hair, for example, found significant changes in water permeability, surface topography and mechanical properties after chemical and consumer-relevant physical damage protocols. Bleaching produced particularly substantial changes.[4]
So the familiar idea that damaged hair is often more porous has a real basis.
Where things get messy is when that gets translated into a perfectly neat equation: flat cuticle = low porosity = healthy, while raised cuticle = high porosity = damaged.
Real hair is not that tidy.
Porosity involves the structure of the fiber and pathways within it, and researchers use much more sophisticated methods to investigate it than simply deciding whether a few cuticle scales look raised.
That distinction matters because otherwise porosity becomes another beauty category where everyone is desperately trying to achieve the ‘correct’ type.
You do not need to turn medium porosity into a new wellness goal.
Low vs. Medium vs. High Porosity Hair
Here is the useful, non-dramatic version.

Notice how the table does not say, ‘Low porosity hair takes exactly 47 minutes to get wet.’ Or, ‘High porosity hair always dries in 20 minutes.’
That is intentional.
Drying time depends on far more than porosity — hair density, strand diameter, length, curl pattern, how much water was in the hair to begin with, products, airflow, temperature and humidity all have a vote.
Porosity gets a vote. It does not get to run the entire election.

Signs Your Hair May Sit Toward the Lower-Porosity End
You are looking for a pattern, not one magic symptom.
It takes time for your hair to become thoroughly saturated
Not “one water droplet sat on my hair for three seconds.” Actually washing it. You may notice that you need to work water through your hair before every section feels evenly wet.
Products can leave a coated feeling fairly easily
Especially if you layer several rich creams, butters, oils and stylers. This does not prove low porosity — buildup can happen to anybody — but repeated coating despite reasonable amounts of product is one clue worth noticing.
A little product can go a long way
Adding more and more conditioner or leave-in may not make the result softer. At some point, you simply have… more conditioner on your hair.
Your relatively unprocessed hair behaves differently from damaged ends
This can be especially informative if newer growth seems slower to saturate while old bleached or highly processed lengths behave differently.

Signs Your Hair May Sit Toward the Higher-Porosity End
Again: pattern, not diagnosis.
Your hair has a significant damage history
Bleaching and repeated chemical or high-heat processing are useful context because structural damage can increase measured porosity.[1][2][4] That does not mean everyone who identifies with high-porosity hair has “bad hair.” But if your ends have been bleached four times, we probably should not ignore that information while staring at a glass of floating hair.
Water seems to saturate some sections readily
This can be especially informative when those sections are also the most processed or weathered.
Your lengths feel rough, tangle easily or break more than newer growth
These are also signs associated with damage, so they are not specific to porosity. What matters is the combination of behavior and history.
Conditioning makes a noticeable difference
Weathered fibers can benefit from conditioning because conditioners can improve surface feel, lubrication and manageability even though they cannot return severely altered hair to untouched virgin condition.

What About Medium Porosity Hair?
Medium porosity gets approximately six minutes of internet attention because there is less to panic about.
That is probably a good thing.
If your hair becomes thoroughly wet without an obvious struggle, responds reasonably well to conditioning, does not accumulate buildup unusually quickly, and does not show the behaviors we associate with heavily weathered hair, you may simply sit somewhere in the middle.
You do not need to optimize your way out of this.
And you do not need to buy products with MEDIUM POROSITY written on them in gold lettering before your hair is allowed to thrive.
Keep paying attention to what your actual hair needs.
Radical concept, apparently.

Your Curl Pattern Does Not Tell You Your Porosity
This deserves its own section because the two concepts get blended together constantly.
Curl pattern describes the shape of the hair fiber. Porosity describes properties related to the fiber’s permeability.
They can interact with your overall hair experience, but they are not interchangeable.
Straight hair can be more or less porous. Wavy hair can be more or less porous. Curly and coily hair can be more or less porous.
And two people with curls that look almost identical can need completely different routines because strand diameter, density, damage history, styling habits, climate, scalp needs — and yes, porosity — are different.
Porosity Is Not Your Entire Hair Type
Finding out that your hair probably sits toward one end of the porosity spectrum can be useful. Finding out and then replacing your entire personality with it is less useful.
Porosity cannot tell you, by itself:
- how fine or coarse your individual strands are;
- how dense your hair is;
- your curl pattern;
- whether your scalp is oily, dry or irritated;
- how much styling hold you prefer;
- whether a particular formula will feel heavy;
- whether you have hard-water or product buildup;
- whether you personally like the result of a product.
This is why two people who both call their hair “low porosity” can disagree completely about the same conditioner and both be telling the truth.
A rich formula might be lovely on dense, coarse hair and overwhelming on fine, lower-density hair even if both people describe similar porosity behavior.
Porosity should help explain your hair. It should not overrule it.
Can Your Hair Porosity Change?
Yes — measurable porosity-related properties can change as the exposed fiber is altered.
Once hair emerges from the scalp, the shaft accumulates weathering as it gets older. Chemical treatments and physical or environmental stress can change that fiber. Laboratory studies have measured porosity-related changes after bleaching and UV exposure, and recent work on textured hair has found changes after repeated consumer-relevant chemical and physical routines.[1][2][3][4]
This also explains why the answer to ‘What is my porosity?’ can sometimes be: Which part of your hair?
Imagine someone with long highlighted hair. Near the roots: newer growth with little chemical processing. Mid-lengths: older hair with more washing, brushing, sun and heat exposure. Ends: the oldest section, possibly with multiple color services and years of mechanical wear.
Calling all three sections one permanent porosity ‘type’ may hide information that is actually useful.

So… How Do You Actually Tell Your Hair Porosity?
This is where I disappoint anyone who was hoping I would tell them to put one strand in a cup of water and reorganize their bathroom cabinet based on whether it sinks.
The famous hair float test goes like this: take a clean strand, put it in water, and label it low, medium or high porosity according to where it floats or sinks.
Beautifully simple.
Also not the way scientific studies quantify hair porosity.
Laboratory research has used methods such as gas sorption and differential scanning calorimetry/thermoporometry, while other studies combine permeability or swelling measurements with microscopy and mechanical testing.[1][2][4]
A loose strand dropped into a glass of water is influenced by variables that a kitchen test does not control. So I would not throw the concept of porosity away. I would throw away the idea that one floating hair has delivered a verdict.

For now, a better at-home approach is to look at multiple clues together.
A Better At-Home Porosity Checklist
Start with freshly washed hair and think about what happens repeatedly, not what happened once on a humid Tuesday.
1. How easily does your hair become thoroughly wet?
Think about actual wash day, not a droplet sitting on dry hair. Do you need to spend noticeable time working water through certain areas, or do your lengths saturate readily?
2. What is your chemical and heat history?
Virgin or lightly processed roots behaving differently from heavily bleached ends is meaningful context.
3. Where does buildup happen?
If small amounts of rich products repeatedly leave your hair coated, note it — but also consider how much you use, how often you cleanse, hard water and the formulas themselves.
4. How do different sections behave?
Compare roots, mid-lengths and ends instead of assuming your entire head needs one label.
5. What happens after conditioning?
Does a normal amount give you slip and softness? Does it leave a coated feeling? Do highly processed ends remain rough and tangle-prone?
The goal is not to score five points and unlock your official Hair Porosity Certificate.
The goal is to identify a consistent pattern that helps you make better decisions.

Does Porosity Tell You Which Products to Buy?
It can narrow the search. It cannot shop for you.
This is one of the places where porosity advice gets far too confident.
You will often see rules like LOW POROSITY = lightweight products only or HIGH POROSITY = heavy creams + oils + protein.
There can be useful reasoning behind some recommendations. Someone whose hair becomes coated easily probably does not need six layers of butter and oil simply because the internet said to ‘seal in the moisture.’ More weathered hair may also benefit from good conditioning and damage-conscious care.
But product performance also depends on the whole formulation, how much you apply, strand diameter, density, styling goal and current hair condition.
An ingredient list is not a personality test.

Is High Porosity Hair Bad?
No — but this answer needs one qualification.
Higher measured porosity can be associated with structural damage, particularly after processes such as bleaching.[1][2][4]
That does not mean everyone who identifies with high-porosity hair has ‘bad hair,’ nor does it mean lower porosity is automatically superior.
The useful question is not: How do I get the best porosity?
It is: What is my hair doing, why might it be doing that, and what would make it easier to care for?

The Hair Porosity Rules You Can Ignore
“Low porosity hair can never use oil.”
No.
“High porosity hair always needs protein.”
Also no.
“If your hair floats, you have low porosity.”
Not enough information.
“Low porosity means healthy hair.”
Too simplistic.
“High porosity means damaged hair.”
Damage can increase porosity, but the label alone is not a complete damage assessment.
“You need a completely different routine once you know your porosity.”
Maybe you need one adjustment. Maybe your current routine already works.
If your hair looks good, feels manageable and behaves the way you want it to, please do not create a crisis because a chart on Pinterest said you should have one.

The Bottom Line
Hair porosity is useful when it explains something you have already noticed.
Why do your bleached ends behave completely differently from your roots? Why does adding more and more rich product leave your hair worse instead of better? Why might one part of your hair need more conditioning than another?
Porosity can help you ask better questions.
What it cannot do is reduce your entire head of hair to one label and hand you a universally perfect shopping list.
So skip the pressure to diagnose yourself perfectly. Watch how your hair behaves. Consider its history. Look at several clues together. Adjust your routine when the result gives you a reason to.
Your hair does not know what category you put it in. It only knows what you do to it.
And frankly, that makes this much easier.

What are the three types of hair porosity?
Haircare guides commonly describe low, medium and high porosity. They are most useful as practical points along a spectrum rather than three perfectly separated biological hair types.
Is hair porosity genetic?
The properties of newly grown hair are influenced by the characteristics of the fiber, but porosity-related properties are not necessarily fixed for the life of a strand. Bleaching, UV exposure and repeated chemical or physical weathering can alter the fiber and increase measured porosity.[1][2][3][4]
Can you have lower-porosity roots and more porous ends?

How often should I test my hair porosity?
There is no evidence-based schedule requiring routine at-home porosity testing. Reassess how your hair behaves when something meaningful changes — after substantial chemical processing, for example — or when your existing routine stops working as expected.
